Skin-care Routine That Might Bear Repeating
We'd laugh and tell you this isn't Groundhog Day if you suggested we use our essence, serum, or moisturizer twice in a row. But, cleansing is one step in our skin-care regimen that may be worth repeating.
What is Double Cleansing?
As we previously stated, double cleansing entails more than simply washing your face again. To get a deeper clean, you need to switch up the washing agent you use. Rita V. Linkner, MD, a traveling dermatologist who is board-certified in the field, defines double cleansing as washing your face with two different types of cleansers.
Initially, "[use] an oil-based cleanser or micellar water," advises board-certified dermatologist David Kim, MD, of New York City. (This removes sunscreen, which we assume you are using, as well as any possible makeup you may be wearing).
What Are The Benefits of Double Cleansing?
If the golden rule of skin care is to always apply sunscreen, washing your face comes in second. This is due to the fact that a clean face is a healthy one, and a healthier face can better absorb and benefit from the skincare you apply to it afterward. Double cleansing can be thought of as a one-two blow against both surface and underlying pollutants.
Who Should Double Cleanse - And When?
Although having a clean face is something we all want, double cleansing isn't always the best way to achieve it. Double cleansing each evening may be ideal for you if you have oily skin and/or wear makeup every day. Double cleansing every day definitely isn't necessary if your skin isn't especially oily or you only use makeup occasionally; a mild cleanser should be enough, according to Dr. Kim.
Also, you should altogether avoid double cleansing if you suffer from rosacea, eczema, or very sensitive or dry skin. According to Dr. Linkner, double cleaning "may be extremely, very draining on the skin." For the same reason, double washing "has to be followed up with a suitable moisturizer to reinstall hydration quickly," Dr. Linkner continues, regardless of your skin type.
